01The problem

Applying to twelve places means maintaining twelve résumés

01

The folder fills up

cv-final.docx, cv-final-2.docx, cv-backend-v3.docx. Fix one bullet, fix it nine more times.

02

The layout fights back

One extra line pushes a section onto page three, and the evening goes on margins.

03

You are renting the file

Your history sits in a format only their editor opens. Leaving means copy and paste.

Not a video. Start in the visual editor, switch to the underlying TOML, then typeset it with the real WebAssembly engine on your machine.

03Presets

Tailoring, without the copies

Every section can hold several named versions of itself. A preset picks one of each, so a research chair and a teaching post come out of the same file.

  • Fix a typo once and every preset has it fixed.
  • Add a role and choose which versions of you mention it.
  • One file to back up, and one file to diff.

04Beyond the document

Writing the CV is the easy part

The hard part is remembering in March what you did in June — and knowing which version of you the company that replied had read. DockCV keeps that context beside the document instead of in another tool.

01

A library that knows where it is

Star a block and drop it into any CV. Each card says which documents already hold a copy, and an edit asks before it spreads.

Reusable blocks

02

A diary that survives the year

Paste the status report you already write and accept the wins one at a time. Later each becomes a line in a CV, and remembers where it went.

Career memory

03

Applications you can be honest about

Sending a card stores the actual PDF, so November can see what July read — and which preset gets answered.

Application history

None of it is generated. No number reaches a CV unless you wrote it down first.

05Alternatives

Where DockCV wins, and where it does not

If you never wanted your CV in a text editor, Google Docs is a good answer — and this table says so. DockCV is for people who value ownership, repeatability, and a file they can inspect.

First-launch note for macOS and Windows

The macOS build carries an ad-hoc signature — a real one, with no paid Apple Developer account behind it — so macOS cannot name the developer and asks once. Open System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security, scroll to Security, and click Open Anyway. On Windows, SmartScreen shows More info ▸ Run anyway. Once, then never again — the full instructions ship with the build.

08FAQ

Questions people ask first

The short version: it is free, local, honest about platform support, and the file stays useful even if you stop using the app.

Is it really free?

Yes. Open source under MIT or Apache-2.0, with no account, no licence key, and no fee to export your own PDF.

Does it phone home?

No telemetry, no analytics, and no account. Everything the app does — editing, typesetting, exporting — happens with no network at all. One exception, stated plainly: DockCV can check whether a newer version exists. That is off until you switch it on, and even then it only looks. Its log records what the app did, never what you wrote.

Where do my documents live?

In a folder you pick: one .toml per CV, plus library.toml, diary.toml and applications.toml. Plain text you can read without the app. Put the folder in iCloud, Dropbox or Git — DockCV never holds your work anywhere else.

Can I import a CV I already have?

From PDF, DOCX, a LinkedIn export, JSON Resume or Markdown. Nothing is written until you confirm what the importer found. A PDF that is a scan has no text to read, and DockCV says so rather than handing you an empty document.

Which platforms does it run on?

macOS 11 or later on Apple Silicon — an M1 or newer, with no Intel build. Windows and Linux archives are published too, and honestly: they build and start, and neither is tested yet.

Why does my Mac say it cannot verify the developer?

The build carries an ad-hoc signature — a real one, with no paid Apple Developer account behind it, because notarisation requires one. Open System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security, scroll to Security, and click Open Anyway. Once.

Will the file format change under me?

It may still move before 1.0 — that is what early access means. It is TOML you can read and diff, so any migration is something you can see and reverse.
